On June 5, 2022, Simiso Buthelezi fought for the WBF African Lightweight Championship in Durban, South Africa against opponent Sifesikhle Mntungwa.
In the 10th round, Simiso Buthelezi received a powerful blow from Mntungwa.
The referee announced a pause in the fight, and when the fight resumed, Simiso Buthelezi deviated from the opponent towards one of the corners and began to strike in the air.
The referee stopped the fight.
Mntungwa was declared the winner by TKO in the 10th round.
Buthelezi was put into an artificial coma after the fight.
On June 8, 2022, Boxing South Africa released a joint statement with the Buthelezi family announcing that Buthelezi died on the evening of June 7 in a hospital in Durban due to a head injury that resulted in internal bleeding.
