Biography

Maxim Levin was born on July 7, 1981, in the city of Boyarka, Kyiv-Svyatoshinsky district, Kyiv region, Ukraine.

Graduated from the Kyiv Polytechnic Institute (now the National Technical University of Ukraine) with a degree in computer systems engineering.

He worked as a photojournalist for the Pension magazine, the Kievskiye Vedomosti newspaper, the Photolenta photo agency, and UNIAN.

Then in “Gazeta 24” (2007-2008).

After 10 years (2010-2020) he worked with the publication of the journalist Sonya Koshkina “Left Bank”.

Then he became a freelancer for Focus and Profile magazines, Reuters and Associated Press agencies, a videographer and photographer at hromadske.

Author of the documentary project about the military “AfterIlovaisk”, as well as the project on responsible fatherhood “Father’s Club”.

Since the beginning of the war in Donbas in 2014, he has been working there as a documentary photographer.

Participant in the events in Ilovaisk in 2014.

Received the Order of Merit, III degree on June 5, 2015 – for a significant personal contribution to the development of Ukrainian journalism, many years of conscientious work, and high professional skills.

How Max Levin died

On April 2, 2022, the Left Bank publication reported that Max Levin had died.

“April 1, after a long search near the village of Guta Mezhyhirska in the Kyiv region, the police found the photographer and documentary maker Max Levin dead,” the report says.

Max Levin, accompanied by Alexei Chernyshev, a soldier and former photographer, traveled to Guta Mezhigorskaya on March 13 to document the aftermath of Russian aggression.

They left the car and went towards the village of Moshchun.

Since then, contact with both men has disappeared.

Later it became known that hostilities began in the area where Max Levin was going to work.

The whereabouts and fate of Alexei Chernyshev have not yet been established.

According to the Vyshgorod District Prosecutor’s Office, unarmed Maxim Levin was killed by Russian armed forces with two shots from small arms.

The pre-trial investigation continues, and measures are being taken to establish all the circumstances of the crime.

On February 24, 2022, Russian President Vladimir Putin staged a full-scale open war against Ukraine, and Russian invaders invaded Ukrainian territory.
