On August 1, 2025, Andriy Pryymachenko announced that he had reached an agreement with HBO after a lawsuit.
Andriy Pryymachenko had been suing HBO for 6 years: he accused the company of using his video without permission in the series “Chernobyl”.
“The agreement with HBO has been concluded. As a result of the trial in the District Court for the Southern District of New York, the parties reached an agreement. This is a significant precedent when it was possible to defend the copyright of a Ukrainian in a US court in a case with one of the largest American (and world) media companies,” the director said.
According to him, the details of the agreement cannot be disclosed, according to the terms of the agreement.
“Since the beginning of this case more than 6 years ago, my goal has been to restore justice. No matter what the company is, no matter what country it is from – whether it is the USA or China – you cannot take someone else’s work and pretend that nothing happened,” Andriy Pryymachenko noted.
“When I took on this case in 2019, I had no idea how long and complex the process would be. Two years of the pandemic and more than three years of a full-scale Russian invasion made this case even more difficult. Throughout the entire journey, I was supported by professionals from the law firm Law Net, with whom we creatively and unconventionally overcame all possible and impossible obstacles,” he added.
The director provided a brief background: in 2019, HBO released the series Chernobyl, the first episode of which copied his work without his knowledge or permission.
“I received rather defiant responses to a friendly appeal to the company producing the series. After that, I decided to go to court. If you have a similar situation, write – I will share my experience. Maybe it will be useful to you,” wrote Andriy Pryymachenko.
